History

The year is 1996:

Christophe and Cecile, husband and wife since 1992, opened their first location Downtown Santa Cruz, under the name “FROG FITNESS.” Christophe being French, they wanted to show that even though they were serious about helping anyone get healthy, it could be done without taking themselves seriously. Calling a French person, a frog can be derogatory, but they both thought it would actually be a fun way to acknowledge Christophe’s native origin. In addition, his mother only let him leave France to the condition he would never forget where he came from. :-)

In 1996, FROG FITNESS IN DOWNTOWN SANTA CRUZ CHANGES ITS NAME TO “TOADAL FITNESS.”

In 1999, a family is born! Toadal Fitness opens a second club located in place of Santa health club. Our family friendly club takes over what used to be a “body building” type club.

2004 CABRILLO FITNESS - a deeply rooted, well liked club in the community JOINed THE TOADAL FITNESS FAMILY to offer even more services.

Cabrillo Fitness located in Aptos was built in 1978 by a group of local racquetball enthusiasts who wanted more access to racquetball courts in the Santa Cruz County area. Bill Rose, the main general partner had been a mentor to Christophe, and it was now time to join forces. Cabrillo Fitness, in addition to offer services other Toadal locations didn’t have, is also located in Aptos which gives members many options to work out within 5 to 10 minutes from home or work. It was just a perfect fit. Since becoming part of the Toadal team, we have consistently added new equipment and implemented new programs while still providing a clean, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

Today.

We now have locations established in Aptos, Live Oak, Downtown, Scotts Valley, on the Westside of Santa Cruz, and now in Watsonville. The owners continue to be deeply involved in day-to-day club operations and continue to proudly serve the greater Santa Cruz area in all six locations. Toadal Fitness is always improving, growing, and in search of ways to better serve the community. Stop in and say hi! You could say you’ve visited a little piece of Santa Cruz history!
